Use Adium? Having trouble getting Jabber accounts to connect? I found a workaround.
I discovered that Adium was not logging in to my Jabber account on startup. It was in an endless retry loop with "Error Socket Not Connected."
I googled it and got some results telling me to change the port number. No joy.
I happened across a bug report for Adium saying that you had to click the Register button even if you've already created your account. Yep, that works.
Here are the details:
1. Go to Adium > Preferences > Accounts.
2. Right click (or control click) on the Jabber account. Click Edit Account.
3. On the Account tab, click Register New Account.
4. Everything should be all better now.

HI there, I am intriqued by your post, because i suddenly find myself with the same dilemma with Adium. That bizarre socket psyche-out.. Only the particulars are slightly different:
OSX 10.6 and Adium 1.3.7 and the affected accounts are not googletalk (works fine) but my ICQ and my AOL accounts. This appeared out of nowhere today. I had a previous bug where I could not control the actual chat windows (tabbed or not). Just ridding prefs led nowhere (dratz) so i found by removing my Application Support file and re-adding all 4-5 chat clients that I had, all of which used to work fine before I updated. Frankly I am not even sure if the update was responsible (terrible troubleshooting!) but I was fairly systematic. And Adium has never had a problem with connecting to my ICQ or the AOL one, The ICQ account is really one of my most used, the AOL one is just a relic, but never gave me a prob before either. Thankfully i fixed the actual chat window problem with the replacement of the App Support. Anyway, i attempted to follow your lead w/ the Accounts tab under Preferences (from within the app) and there is no “registration” geegaw or anything to indicate that to me. I was hoping you might have more insight into this? I imagine you were using another version prior to 1.3.7 but since upgrading, i can’t discover if they changed the features in the Accounts window. Any ideas would be great, or perhaps lead me to some of the sources you hunted down prior to your resolution. I imagine i will find myself wading through the muck that is (hopefully) some relevant forums. I can (still) be contacted via the yahoo account: aprilreign25 If I don’t hear back - i’ll understand. Since switching to my new 24” iMac (am loving it) I have so much to transfer and configure. Who knows, maybe, I’ll be lucky and it will stop messing up on its own (hah fat chance probably) sometimes that works too though. Anyway thanks for posting your findings. oh PS I should mention, since i saw no reference to the “Register” in the Accounts pane of Preferences, (i looked through the others too) I decided to “RE-Register” by re-adding the accounts, but I got the same ole Desperately Seeking Socket behavior. Well, thanks again... Susan
